Circlip Break Protector
Our BOSCH Gen2 Circlip Break Protector fixes a common problem of BOSCH Gen2 engines:
It simply and effectively prevents the retaining ring (Seeger Ring) on the crankshaft from breaking or popping out.
The problem:
The gear wheel on the crankshaft is guided/positioned in axial direction by two circlips.
Due to the helical gearing, this gear is pressed to the left (in the direction of travel) when the pedal is pressed and is supported against the left-hand circlip (on the right in the picture). This retaining ring may suffer a crack or break or jumps out of the groove as a result.
Solution:
Renewing the retaining rings and add a special shim between the two left retaining rings (on the picture on the right).
This has three advantages:
a) The shim ensures that the support of the gear is now distributed over two retaining rings (double support).
b) The first retaining ring can no longer "jump out", as there is no space available for this.
c) Even in the now unlikely event of the first circlip breaking, the gear is guided to such an extent that it can no longer scrape against the gear holder or motor housing, thus preventing chip formation.
The set consists of:
2x replacement for the original shim washers
1x matching shim washer for the circlip at risk of breaking
3x precisely fitting high quality circlip (Seeger ring) for the crankshaft

Why do I need ths circlip protection shim?
Because the retaining rings can break under load, it looks like this:
As it progresses, the fragments enter the gear train, sometimes causing the pedalling to "jam".
If enough force is applied, the fragments are ground into chips by the hardened gears.
The real problem, however, is that the gear is no longer guided on the crankshaft and grinds against the gear holder and engine housing under load. This grinding usually only occurs under load (with a more powerful pedal) and leads to this result:
The aluminium chips generated in this way travel through the engine and then damage the plastic gears, among other things:
In the worst case, the chips then get onto the circuit board and cause faulty voltages or short circuits.
Our observations have shown that motors built between 2013 and 2016 are particularly affected - in newer models we are increasingly finding retaining rings that have jumped out of the groove but have not broken. Apparently there has been a change in the hardness of the retaining rings. However, the result is fatal in both cases.
Regardless of the cause, this circlip break protection set protects the gear against displacement and thus represents an effective and important protection.
In order for us to be able to guarantee the functionality of the engines we repair without hesitation, all engines we work on receive this circlip break protection without exception.
